The West Lincoln Rebels boys soccer team closed out its regular season with an impressive upset victory over a nationally ranked opponent, setting the stage for a historic milestone as the program prepares to host its first-ever state playoff match.
The Rebels defeated Piedmont Community Charter 3-2 Wednesday night, October 28, knocking off the 17th-ranked 3A team to finish the regular season with a 15-8 record.
West Lincoln also picked up a 1-0 victory over Lincolnton on Tuesday, October 27. Edwin Ramirez scored the game's only goal, while goalkeeper Chase Driscoll recorded seven saves on seven shots on goal to earn the shutout.
Against Piedmont Community Charter, Ramirez led the Rebels with two goals and an assist, bringing his career total to 109 goals, including 47 this season. Bryon Blas added a goal off an assist from Yahir Santos. Driscoll turned away 13 of 15 shots on goal.
The 15 victories establish a new single-season record for West Lincoln boys soccer, surpassing last year's record of 11 wins. The Rebels have now posted back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in program history.
West Lincoln finished the regular season ranked 20th among 3A teams based on RPI, earning the No. 9 seed in the state playoffs.
Now, the Rebels are making even more history.
For the first time in school history, West Lincoln will host a boys soccer state playoff game. The ninth-seeded Rebels will welcome the No. 24-seeded West Davidson Dragons on Monday, November 2, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
The team is encouraging the community to come out, fill the stands and support the Rebels as they begin their postseason run.
