Ministry Encourages You To Consider Elderly
Extreme heat is extreme threat to vulnerable groups
LINCOLNTON––With this summer’s extreme heat, Christian Ministry wants you to think of the elderly and homeless.
That’s the word this week from executive director Mitzi Williams. As summertime temperatures continue to soar, Williams noted that staying cool amid the heat is a challenge many are facing.
“Without the luxury of air-conditioning, many seek refuge in public spaces or shaded parks,” she said. “Others rely on community donations and local shelters to escape the extreme heat. The excessive heat is hard on the elderly and those living in poor conditions without air-conditioning as well.”
Williams cited Christian Ministry’s day retreat, open 1-4 p.m., available for anyone who needs a place to rest and cool off. She added that if you would like to donate any items––id est, water, fans, hats, sunglasses, etc.––to the shelter or to the ministry for those who are homeless or those in need, you may drop them off at the ministry, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
“We just want to remind you to check on your elderly neighbors and family and think of the homeless during the summer heat,” Williams reiterated.
In other news, the ministry’s soup kitchen needs olive oil, parchment paper, forks and gallon-sized storage/freezer bags. And the pantry needs crackers, peanut butter, breakfast foods, detergent, bar soap and pop-top can foods. Plus, emergency services emergency services is asking for tennis shoes in all sizes for men, women, boys and girls. Also needed are women’s undergarments in all sizes.
With the help of its member churches, local businesses, social groups and individual supporters, Christian Ministry seeks to meet the needs of those who are less fortunate through its emergency services, soup kitchen, annual Christmas campaign, nursing home program and, for local elderly and shut-in residents, the delivery of LINC Home Meals.
