He wasn't a player or a coach but George Smith was synonymous with Lincolnton High School athletics.  He served as Sports Boosters president and as the voice behind the microphone announcing games for football, baseball, and basketball.  In 2017, he was honored for 40 years of service to LHS and in 2019, he was inducted into the Lincoln County Sports Hall of Fame.

George was also involved for many years in Special Olympics of Lincoln County and as a long-time member of First Baptist Church, he served as a deacon and ran the audio-video equipment for services for more than 30 years.

George passed away on Tuesday of last week (March 26th). A celebration of his life of service will be held this Tuesday (April 2nd) at the church.

Former LHS Football Coach Scott Cloninger said George's work as one of the 'supporting cast' deserves recognition.  "George worked many years alongside Max Garner and Steve Peeler handling prss box duties.  His true love and passion to help the student athletes were a big reason for our teams' success.  He will be remembered along with a handful of others who are true LHS Sports legends--no as a coach or player but as one of those who really cared about our programs.
