Landers Chapel UMC
Press Release

On Saturday, October 16, Landers Chapel United Methodist Church United Methodist Women sponsored its annual breast cancer awareness walk. Participants gathered to enjoy fellowship with those affected by breast cancer and to raise over $1,200 for Cancer Services of Gaston County. They also heard from guest speaker Joanne Brooks, a member of Marvin UMC and three-time breast cancer survivor.

Ms. Brooks learned she had breast cancer in 1996, then again in 2009, and most recently in May 2021. Brooks thanked God for helping her survive cancer three times, but also offered practical advice: do regular self-exams and never skip a mammogram.

More good advice came from a gentleman in the group, Bud Ellis, who highlighted the fact that men can also get breast cancer. Mr. Ellis recounted his experience from many years ago when his doctor prescribed a mammogram for him. The results were negative, but it remained a stark reminder that men too are at risk for breast cancer. Finally, participants remembered church members and others who had suffered with breast cancer, observing its hereditary aspects as they identified a mother, daughter, and aunt within a single family who had fought the disease. Though a sobering discussion, tones of gratitude, continuous learning, and community dominated the entire event.

Pastor Amy Lambert thanked the participants for their various roles in making the event a success. A special thanks went out to Sheila Hallman, creator of lovely (and comfortable) breast cancer awareness masks for everyone. These practical gifts remind us of the need to remain vigilant in efforts to prevent, promptly diagnose, and find a cure for breast cancer!

Landers Chapel UMC can be found at 1205 Long Shoals Road, Lincolnton, NC 28092. Despite its Lincolnton address, it is located in Gaston County and proudly serves both communities!
