VALE––Cedar Grove Lutheran Church is preparing its third annual live Nativity scenes.
That’s the word Sunday from church spokeswoman Loretta Beam. The big chapel, located at 261 Cedar Grove Church Road in rural Vale, will once again host the free event Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 10 and 11, 6-8 p.m. both nights. Beam, who is credited with creating the event, explained that the church’s first such live Nativity scenes originated during the State-mandated COVID-19 restrictions of 2020.
“We were trying to determine how to deal with the situation all of us were in, especially in churches,” she said. “Each year, we enjoyed preparing and presenting traditional Christmas programs with our children and youth and a few adults at times. Faced with the new challenge of worshipping exclusively outdoors due to the pandemic, we decided to try and create some scenes outdoors and invite the community. Some of our members had visited other churches’ outdoor live Nativity events before and suggested that we might try something similar. We made some plans, engaged many of our members in using their gifts and started publicizing the event.
“It was a blessing for all involved,” Beam continued, “and we had a lot of community response. Many were thankful to have something to attend safely from their cars that focused on the Christian message of the season––beginning with the angel visiting Mary, to the crowded town of Bethlehem with its marketplace and inn, to the hillside with the sheep and shepherds, a live angel chorus, Wise Men with gifts and finally the stable scene with the Holy Family.”
She added that the event was so meaningful for the church that its members did something similar with a Passion/Resurrection theme when Holy Week arrived in 2021. They repeated both efforts in 2021 and again this past spring.
Regarding this year’s live Nativity scenes, Beam said vehicles should enter the main driveway, which gradually encircles the sanctuary and educational building and exits by a back driveway.
And whilst again, the event is free of charge and not any sort of fundraiser, Beam added that Cedar Grove invites folks to remember that charity is the heart of the Christian message.
“We encourage those who come,” she said, “if they are inspired by what they see, to respond by blessing and supporting any organization they wish.”
