LINCOLNTON, N.C. - National CPS Certification Training is a program of Safe Kids Worldwide. They work closely with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the National Child Passenger Safety Board, and State Farm. This national certification is a college level course and covers a variety of topics covering vehicle safety and child safety restraints. http://cert.safekids.org/
Juliana Whitaker is the Child Care Health Consultant and Safe Kids Coordinator for Lincoln County. Juliana received her Proxy Certification in April 2016 to provide sustainability for area Technicians to maintain their CPS certification. She is making strides in the community to help families make sure their child is riding in the right seat at every age. With a growing need to provide free car seat checks in the community and increase the availability at the Permanent Checking Stations, Safe Kids Lincoln County recently offered a Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPS Tech) Certification class.
Lincoln County Emergency Management Services (EMS) hosted the CPS Technician Certification course June 7-10 for 19 participants from various surrounding counties. CPS Technicians had to pass multiple tests as well as successfully complete a hands-on skills evaluation.
On Friday, June 10, Safe Kids Lincoln County partnered with the Lincolnton Walmart and offered a Free Car Seat Check in the community. During this event, child passenger safety information was handed out, 10 car seat checks were performed, and new CPS Technicians completed their hands-on skill test at the event by giving one on one instruction on how to properly install child seats. Lincoln County now has seven new CPS Technicians!
Lincoln County is diligently working to establish a local Safe Kids Coalition dedicated to providing childhood injury prevention and education to our community. Our Coalition has three focus areas—Child Passenger Safety, Fire Safety, and Medication Safety/Poison Prevention.
