DENVER - Earlier in the week I sat down with Logan and Chase Gilley, two men who were huge attributes to the East Lincoln High School varsity soccer team and their trip to the state finals, along with many personal goals (no pun intended), throughout the season. These two have had a long journey from not even playing soccer to committing to go to App State with dreams of going pro. This is what they had to say about their careers so far.

We started talking about how they got into soccer and what led them to play for club teams. They both obviously were introduced to soccer at a young age since they were always together, their next-door neighbor showed the twins how to properly kick the ball and a little bit of footwork that they could handle at such a young age. We then took a big jump to our freshmen year of high school, when the boys did not play for the high school and at the time being one of their friends, I thought that was very weird seeing how much they cared about the sport and how much work they put into it. I did not learn why they did not play their freshmen year until a few days ago when they explained to me that they signed an exclusivity contract with a certain club team that they did not want to name, that stated they could not play soccer for any other location.

The twins and I took a little break from the questions and just hung out but, we eventually got back on track to the conversation. I wanted to know just how much they care about soccer and asked them if they ever had doubts about soccer and flirted with the idea of not playing anymore.

They said yes, “A few times over the years we were told by coaches and teammates that we were too small and did not know how to play proper defenses.” the boys faced a good bit of criticism over the years but none of that has slowed them down yet.

Later the boys told me a little bit about why they chose to go to Appalachian State and why they know they made the right choice, “We knew when we went to visit the campus and the coaches we just felt like it was the right place for us as students and as players.” I wanted to know who has helped the boys make certain decisions and they credit a lot to their fellow East teammates, but they gave a special thanks to Tammy and Todd their parents who have been helping them since “Day One” as they put it.

Finally, I talked to Logan and Chase about the state championship game and what happened with it, and it took them a minute to agree on an answer but they eventually both said that Dixon had a better defensive strategy and studied East well and knew to keep them at bay and box them out of scoring contention.

I put my bias aside with Logan and Chase since I see them as two of my best friends. I just wanted to sit down with them and make sure that people will be able to see just how much they care about the sport. I hope that they accomplish all that they want to in their careers and I wish them the best of luck.
