A Gastonia newspaper said it was a hatchet attack, but the Gastonia Police reported that at approximately 10:30 Tuesday morning (Nov. 1st), officers responded to the 400 block of Redding Street for the report of a stabbing that had just occurred oat a construction site.
Responding officers located three adult men suffering from laceration injuries. The men told officers that they were all doing work when the suspect rode up on a bicycle and assaulted them. The victims said that they did not know the suspect and did not know why they were assaulted. After the assault, the suspect fled on a bicycle.
The victims provided officers with a physical description of the suspect and of the bicycle that he was riding. The victims were transported to CaroMont Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Approximately two hours later, officers located an individual near N. Rhyne Street and Davidson Avenue who matched the suspect’s description. He was stopped and officers found the suspect was in possession of a machete.
He is identified as 36-year-old Decarlos Freshley. He has been charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill resulting in serious bodily injury and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to seriously injure. He is being held in the Gaston County Jail without the privilege of bond.
