On Friday (Sept. 9th) at approximately 1:30 pm, the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Catawba County on Startown Road near Settlemyre Bridge Road. A 2017 Dodge Charger was traveling south on Startown Road, ran off the road to the right in a curve, overcorrected, crossed the centerline, ran off the road to the left, and overturned several times.
The driver, Tyoun Jason Martise Shuford, 25, of Newton, was not restrained by a seatbelt and was ejected. He was transported from the scene by EMS but succumbed to his injuries a short time later. The initial investigation indicates excessive speed as a contributing factor in the collision.
