Man Shot Breaking Into Occupied Residence

Lincoln County Sheriff's
Office Press Release

LINCOLNTON, N.C. – A Robbinsville man is facing breaking and entering charges after barging into a residence northeast of Lincolnton and was shot by the resident.

Deputies were dispatched to the incident on March 5, 2022 after the homeowner called 911 and advised he shot the intruder.

Charles Lee Mayberry, 34, of Robbinsville, NC came to the residence to see his wife and to confront Jeffery (Chad) Freeman, 33, of Brent Trail, Lincolnton, NC where the woman was staying. Believing her daughter was coming to visit, Ms. Mayberry opened the door when someone knocked. When she did, Mr. Mayberry pushed his way inside the home and an altercation occurred with Mr. Freeman.

Mr. Freeman ran to a back bedroom and as Mr. Mayberry continued to threaten and pursue him, Freeman fired one shot which grazed the side of Mr. Mayberry’s head. Freeman then ran to a neighbor’s house and called 911. Mr. Mayberry was treated by Lincoln County EMS then transported to Atrium Lincoln with non-life threatening injuries. The shooting incident was ruled self-defense.

Mayberry has been charged with felony breaking and entering/terrorize occupant and misdemeanor communicating threats. He is also wanted in Graham County for failure to appear in court. Mayberry was arrested on March 9, 2022 and released on bond.
