Rules --- Thank You
Written May 12, 2022

Judge Rembert
Guest Columnist

Rules made her life easier...
Born into a family who had rules...
She learned early that rules were good...
She did not like to be in trouble...
Learn the rules...
Follow the rules...
Stay out of trouble...
Simple...

Rules at Aunt Es's house were different...
Different from Grandma's rules...
Different from Mama's rules...
But that was easy to figure out...
Even for a little girl...

She could trust these adults in her life...
You broke a rule and you were punished...
Not now and then but now...
She knew the rules...
Now this made this little girl feel safe...
She felt loved...
She felt secure...

At the time she really did not know...
Know why she felt safe...
But now she is grown and she knows...
Knows why...
She has always liked rules...
If a rule is bad try to change it...
But follow it and stay out of trouble...

She is an old lady now...
She is retired...
She has time to sit on her porch in the swing...
Watching her wild birds in her yard...
She has time to think about those adults...
Adults in her life...
Life when she was a little girl...
She thinks of them often...
She wishes she could thank them...
Thank them for taking the time to teach her...
They invested their time into her...

She knows now what they did for her...
She knows now how this changed her life...
She knows now what they did for her...

More About Judge Rembert: WWII made Judge an only child when her half-brother was killed in the war. She lived in a tiny town in South Carolina until she was eight and her Mother went to work. She was sent to a boarding school in Belmont, N.C. From that time on she has lived back and forth in the two Carolinas. They are both home. She was born dyslexic and did not know what the problem was or that it had a name until she was about 45. She was unable to spell so she never put words on paper until she was 65 and had a computer with spell check. She comes from a long line of story tellers and a Mother that taught her much by telling stories. Stories about people and how they faced life and how they dealt with problems. If you read what she writes you may hear her Mother and her Grandmother talking to her. She is thrilled to know that anyone reads her words and finds them interesting. Oh, she is 75 now and she now makes her home in Aiken, S.C. If you like Judge’s writings or would like to comment on them let her know by emailing [email protected].
